Well, here's proof that we are slow DIYers. Remember way back when...we started working on spiffing up our daughter's room. It used to look like this when she was little, but she's 17 and she as other ideas about her room now. Bright ideas. Very bright!
I like how it's turning out. I made the shades using directions from Two Straight Lines and I like how they turned out. DD wanted something modern, with her modern and the vintage architecture and furniture I think we're getting a bohemian look.
This is just another little thing I forgot to show you earlier. I made some ornaments from old children's book pages collaged onto glass ornaments.
"To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk."

I love art, gardening, junking and all kinds of vintage stuff! This blog will have treasures I find, things I have remade into new treasures, cool vintage stuff- and also photos I take of garden art and recycling that I find on my jaunts. And of course it will feature my home...the ultimate recycling/renovating project!

Recycling for the shop
I've been buying those white merchandise tags, but lately I've been thinking about what a waste that is. After all, when I go to an auction I buy dollar boxes that have odds and ends in them...usually there is neat stuff I could use to make tags: old books, wallpaper, string, wire, greeting cards. I just need to spend the time. The red floral paper is vintage wallpaper that my aunt got in an auction box. I've been using it for shelf liner at the shop. The string came out of my auction finds. I think these tags are much cuter than those plain white ones and all I had to do was dig around in my supplies.
I'm making some progress with my sewing room and I may even have a picture to share later on tonight.

VOTE
I don't know what your politics are, but here it's time to vote. If it's the day for your state, I encourage you to get out and make your voice heard. If you don't like the video, that's ok....that's one of the cool things about living here. We can disagree, make ourselves heard and still respect each other.

Making a closet, a sewing room, and piles of fabric
My 20 year old son is moving back in to try and save some money. So that means I'm moving my sewing room back into the smallest bedroom. I had been using his old room. I'm cool with him moving back in...he's a funny kid and keeps me either aggravated or laughing all the time. Probably if you have a 20 year old son you can relate!
Unfortunately the smallest bedroom had become the junk room (no mere junk drawer for me!) and moving everything from both rooms is a huge job. Granted, it's a job that really needed to be done anyway...now I have the push I needed to get it done. I'm sorting through all the vintage bits and dabs of fabric and lace. These shelves are some cheapies from Kmart that we covered in music a long time ago. We used them in our booth in the antique mall.
I had been using the closet in the sewing room as my closet...like many older homes our bedrooms have tiny closets. Joe uses the one in our room and Mike will be using the one in his room. The closet in this room is very tiny. So I have a plan.
I've put a shelf on each side of the room and I'm planning to hang a closet rod in between the two and hide the closet part with a curtain of some sort. I pulled the shelves out to make the spot deep enough for hangers. Behind the shelves rolls and bolts of fabric are stored. We'll see how it all works out. The ideal thing would probably be to frame in an actual closet here. Joe is working overtime right now though and so I'm improvising.

Snow!
We had about 8 inches of snow last night. Hawkeye thinks it's fun! We have had some wild weather. Wednesday it was 47 degrees and that night it was -5 degrees with 50 mile an hour winds. And now we have this pretty snow. I much prefer the snow!
I thought I was taking a pic of the gingerbread, but actually I ended up with a pic of how badly yellow paint fades. Of course the old paint is 9 or 10 years old, but still.
